ARES with APC tables

ARES with APC tables adds to ARES already impressive range of abilities by the addition of Automatic Pallet Changing tables (APC). With the addition of the APC system ARES carries out non-stop cycles with ease. While one table is inside ARES protected work envelop, the other APC table has been moved outside and the finished parts can be unloaded from 3 sides and reloaded, following which the "ready-to-begin-work-again" button can be pushed at which point ARES can start work automatically, leaving the operator free to oversee and prepare for what's next.

KARAT - 2R8

KARAT - 2R8

Just one of KARAT's many versions, KARAT is here shown with a double 8 position revolver, 2R8, which are capable of independent CNC controlled work in unison on the same table, or independently on separate tables and even with different programs at the same time. CMS' revolver is the world's fastest tool changing methodology, since the time to change tools is that required only to move from one position to the next. In addition CMS' revolver system permits each spindle to be "tuned" to a specific power range, so that lower rpm work can have a spindle with more poles on the field winding for higher power at lower rpm. CMS' R8 is also renowned for its dust collection capability with its very large dust collection envelop in which the dust's kinetic energy is dissipated, as well as its large volume air flow capacity connections situated at both ends, making it an excellent solution, in particular, when using elevated pods for applications involving edge work.

As a further expansion on KARAT's abilities, it's shown here with a double 5 axis working head type PX5. The PX5 is a powerful, full, free form, 5 axis capable head, supplied with CMS' unique and patented rotating dust manifold for unobstructed freedom and dust collection throughout its 5 axis movement incorporating its programmable dust hood which opens and closes to permit an automatic tool change. As with the KARAT 2R8, this 2 PX5 provides complete independence of both heads to either work together on the same table or independently on separate tables, at the same time, even executing different programs, as shown in the photo, with its tables and heads each at different positions. PX5's working unit is provided with a 16 place on-board rack for tool changing.

Fine carving - ball and claw leg

High quality carving. Shown in this video can be seen an example of CMS' capability for high end quality, fine carving on a ball and claw leg. This Karat style machine is capable of carving 6 identical pieces at the same time. Each high power spindle has its own set of tools to complete the work required for the part being produced. The CNC controlled 4th axis movement takes place on the adjustable point/counterpoint holding system, with alignment support for easy setup, which rotates the parts about their axis. The 5th axis movement is on the spindle group, which provides the additional range of motion so that true carving movements can be replicated by the CNC. In addition to this, a special 6th axis is incorporated which provides the capability of replicating the master carver's hand movements required of fine incision carving tools, as opposed to using a routing action.

Beyond what is seen in the video, CMS also provides its unique programming system which allows for CNC program creation based on the actual movements and paths the master carver would take on a particular part, incorporating templated tool bodies to collect the points of each path, which replicate real world best practices and are then processed into a finished program and splined together to provide smooth, accurate, repeatable quality.
 

Table top with heavy lumber bands

Production of a large conference table top (or dining table top) with heavy lumber bands. In this video a large conference top, with heavy lumber bands glued to a particle board core having a laminate surface, is machined with a precise profile between the top's surface and the lumber band. The top is placed on a Karat style machining center with CNC controlled table setup for automatic placement of the raised vacuum holding pods, allowing complete and instant flexibility for just-in-time and to the order manufacturing requirements. The lumber band is precisely machined in its relationship to the top surface, avoiding any damage to the surface with the use of CMS' 4th axis electronic probing technology, which places an electronic probe on the top's surface to the inside of the lumber band and rotates the probe so that it's constantly oriented at a right angle to the top's outer edge and at every moment copying the precise elevation of the surface and, consequently, adjusting the relationship of the cutting tool to the surface ensuring a perfectly flush joint on a beautiful top.

The video also shows CMS' probing technology for part placement and trimming of a circular top with heavy lumber bands. Again the top is placed on the CNC controlled table setup. The operator places a locating "puck", with a cross-hair mark at the center of the top's veneer pattern. The program executes a triangulation routine and determines the true center of the "puck" and adjusts the program accordingly, meaning that the top has been referenced from its real center and not just an approximate outside edge, insuring a perfect outcome and an equal amount of banding on all sides of the top. CMS' probing routine can be used for "half-tops", leaves, inlaid banding, and determine where the part is, its orientation, and make adjustments to guarantee that band width is preserved and equal, as well as a range of other important production factors to be controlled.
 

Tops - blanks and heavy lumber bands

This video shows a double table Karat with an R8 revolver, with tool changing capability, even during a machining process, 4th axis CNC controlled horizontal aggregates, and probing device, which is also used in conjunction with CMS' "puck" location system as described in the prior video.

The video also presents blanking operations in which particle board cores are prepared and to which the lumber bands will be glued, again done on CMS' CNC controlled table setup system; finally a probing cycle is executed with 4 "pucks", one on each corner of a rectangular top to determine location, orientation and ensure that the band is equally distributed around the core.
 

Bent chair legs - high volume - 4th axis

This video shows high volume production of complex bent chair legs on a 6 position (six legs at a time) double table Karat with 5 axis capability and special fixtures for holding and rotating the legs, so that all the joints may be machined as well as the outer edges, and completing all the work. At the end of the cycle the parts are released to a take away belt and delivered to the center of the machine to be unloaded by the operator.

This video shows a 6 position Karat machining center with 5 axis capability and a 6th axis used for carving with an incision blade, as a master carver would use. It presents the roughing and finishing of the leg shaping, as well as beautiful carving along its length. The complete cycle included the joints, which were machined, but not shown here.
