Working with stone is an art that reaches back through time to a point where man was first able to conceive the use of the tools he needed to work with one of the most abundant and durable building materials available—stone.

Conceived as time progressed were buildings, useful structures, memorials, and sculpture represented in such works as the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, Stone Henge, the Parthenon, Michelangelo's David, and mausoleums which carry forward their remembrance through time.

Those who do this work have been traditionally called by a number of different names such as:

 quarrymen, those who extract the blocks from the ground
 sawyers, those who cut the blocks into useful size for those who will work them to their final purpose
 masons, those who have the skills to re-purpose the blocks into useful pieces for the work required, their tools, methods and knowledge have been acquired through the past millennia
 carvers, those who bridge from the work of stone to the art of stone work

With that said, though these methods and the underlying technology have remained little changed during the last millennia, in 1985 CMS changed this dynamic with the introduction of the first CNC machining centers dedicated to the work of "stonecraft", one which could be exploited by the "sawyers", "masons" and "carvers" working in stone. The engineering, design and production of CMS/Brembana's broad line of CNC machining centers has been widely accepted at this point throughout the world and the name Brembana has become associated with the idea of a CNC machining center for stone.

The limits of stonecraft work have vastly diminished with the introduction of Brembana applied CNC machining technology, up through and including 5/6 axis requirements, applied through machining centers, bridge saws, and waterjets.

The field of application is wide including: exteriors, interiors, kitchen countertops, showers and enclosures, flooring and inlays, stone stairs and handrails, patio tables and benches, dimensional stone, carved capitals and columns, as well as laser copying and restoration work, head stones and engraving, memorials and statues.

CMS/Brembana's CNC stone cutting machines provide versatile solutions for a wide range of applications, from quarry blocks to countertops. CMS/Brembana stone cutting equipment features monobloc construction and fabricated steel weldments for superior durability and longevity. Brembana spindles are cooled using closed loop glycol systems that extend working their life. All Brembana stone cutting machines feature metalized paint to prevent corrosion. Waterjet cutting functions are available on select models. In addition, CMS/Brembana offers automatic tool wear compensation for all its CNC stone cutting equipment.

Processing stoneProcessing stone

Most types of stone can be easily processed with the right equipment. Stone can be machined via cutting, milling, routing, drilling, and other processes. The methods and tools needed to process stone can vary greatly depending on the type of stone and the product being produced. Diamond-tipped implements may be required when working with certain harder stone materials.

Drilling and other stone machining processes can produce considerable heat. To overcome this, Brembana CNC stone machining centers include mist or full-flood features. These systems also help control the dust and particulate that is generated when machining stone.
 

Physical/Chemical Properties of StonePhysical/Chemical properties of stone

Stone is a naturally occurring aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids. Stones fall into three main categories—igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary—based on their mineral and chemical composition, permeability, particle texture, and particle size. Granite is a popular example of igneous stone, marble is a well-known metamorphic stone, and limestone is a commonly-used sedimentary stone.

Stone materials have a wide range of diverse properties, based on their composition and the factors that lead to their formation. In general, stone is a very strong, dense, and durable material. It offers very low thermal and electrical conductivity, and most varieties exhibit strong resistance to chemicals and corrosion.

If they’re meant for aesthetic or decorative purposes, many types of stone can be polished to a fine finish.

CMS/Brembana has the complete range of CNC machining centers for stone working.  With up to 5/6 interpolating axes, Brembana gives the maximum in CNC machine center flexibility for stone processing operations. 

CMS/Brembana can be used to pump out kitchen counter tops, saw bevels at discrete angles as well as make intricate carvings in most any natural material all in the same day. 

CMS/Brembana's CNC machining centers come with many available options—including probing devices, many different saw blade sizes, a range of different vacuum connections, all based on the material you need to hold.

CMS/Brembana's top of the line CNC bridge saws are used everything from countertop production to cutting quarry blocks and can be provided with a range of blade with diameters up to 1200 mm and powerful spindles of up to 42 hp.

The CMS/Brembana bridge saw range also has a wide array of options available such as—the under blade system, a large vacuum manipulator lifting capacity to highlight just some of those available.

Waterjet machines are useful beyond measure both in combination with a saw or as a standalone machine.  

As a Saw Jet, the waterjet side allows tight nesting and notching along with improved yield. 

Saw jet CNC's are available on 3 and 5 axis models, as required, and can cut nearly any material.  

​Waterjets are especially good at cutting intricate work such as inlays, medallions, and lettering.

Machining of limestone cornice - building

A heavy limstone block is machined into a cornice for a building. The video shows:

  • a look at the special tools and blades used, some of which will be mounted in extensions to permit access to tight areas
  • the initial pass for the top reference surface
  • the roughing blade work
  • the milling passes to bring out the intended shape
  • end milling tools for sharp square transition surfaces
  • a view of the finished cornice

G-Rex stone block cutting with large diameter blade

G-Rex is shown processing a large heavy quarry block of sedimentary stone approximately 20" thickness. The processing of the block will be done with a blade of 1200 mm in diameter (48"~).
G-Rex's work envelop can be configured as large as 4.25 m wide up to 7 m+ in length with 4th and 5th axes of 270° +/- and 100° +/- respectively.

The first work will be to "rough" the block to an approximate final size. G-Rex's large blade travels back and forth in deeper slices till the cut is finished. The 6 pole 220 Nm spindle of 31 hp makes easy work of this big job.

Next, G-Rex turns its 1200 mm blade on edge (horizontally) to shape the stone slab around its outside edges: large rounds on the corners while machining an ellipse shape on the sides.

Lastly. G-Rex uses its blade to cut a large opening on the inside of the block.

G-Rex machines a large stone column.

The first work is to machine the support and centering holes on both ends, which will be used to mount the block in the turning lathe.

The subsequent operations are as follows:

  • tapping out the plug from the ends
  • drilling a "rotational drive" hole for rotating the column about its center
  • mounting the turning center
  • rough blade cutting the surfaces with a number of slots, which when tapped with a hammer will remove the excess material
  • roughing passes to "square off" the top and bottom feet of the column
  • roughing passes along the length of the column to create the column surface
  • change from blade work to end mill work along the length of the column
  • milling of the straight slots from top to bottom along the column length
  • milling the shape of the circular base foot at bottom of the column
  • milling a convex shape at the top of the column head with a blade
     

Maxima machining a granite curved arch molding with 5 axis saw blade

Maxima is shown using it's 5 axis capability with a 16" diameter saw blade to create a complex arch molding surface on a granite block.

The granite block is held by use of Maxima's vacuum clamping system.

The surface of the molding is refined by CNC control of the saw blade until a finished molding for an archway is revealed.

The use of the saw blade points out the important versatility which Maxima has. There is no need to buy a "form" tool to create this profile. The heavy amount of material to be removed and the creation of a perfect surface have both been accomplished without a "special" vertical milling tool being used, but rather a "standard" saw blade, used for many different purposes.

The Maxima OF with VNT video highlights CMS/Brembana's patented VNT technology for processing stone slabs into finished parts, all without manual intervention by the operator, movement of parts within the machine cycle or removal of the offal that would otherwise interrupt the cycle.

VNT (Vertical Nesting Technology) makes it possible to provide the ultimate flexibility and common sense technology, as well as efficiency, to CMS/Brembana's line of CNC machining centers—and when its added to Maxima the outcome is the best possible combination of its technology for Stone processing work available.

VNT makes it possible for the user to load a full slab onto the machine, process the slab, then remove the finished pieces from off the machine—all with no operator intervention during its cycle.

Maxima VNT can carry out a complete range of processing operations such as sawing, milling, drilling, profiling and polishing on a stone slab, and yet avoid the obvious concerns of overcutting on adjacent parts simply by raising and lowering the pieces out of each others way.

The video also shows an illustration of the included automatic pod placement system provided with the machine, which makes possible the proper placement of each vacuum pod, including the rectangular ones, as well as part references.
