CNC Mills
What is a CNC Mill?
The idea of milling is much older than the concept of CNC Milling. Milling is the process of removing material from solids of various sorts; those who did the work were called “millers” and the machines came to be known as milling machines.
Milling is usually is meant to describe the process of cutting heavier materials which have ductile qualities, such as metal. As opposed to light and brittle materials, like wood, heavier materials are drawn out in the cutting process, usually involving slower cutting rpms, higher power requirements and some form of “flooding” at the cutting tool to reduce heat and reduce friction during the cutting process.
Today’s CNC milling machines, require high power electro-spindles, high accuracy, and for certain applications – such as surfacing, machining of “wing spars,” and many other such works – high speed machining capabilities coupled with high acceleration/deceleration performance to overcome the often numerous short movements involved in the process, the lack of which results in the high machining speeds intended never actually being obtained.
As mentioned in another section, the appropriateness of what a CNC Mill is called is more dependent on the nature of the material being cut than on the tool itself. In the realm of CNC machining centers, the same machine (depending upon machine design) can cut either light or heavy materials, in one case being popularly called a “CNC router”, in the other a “CNC mill.”
CMS CNC Mill Advantages
CMS’ CNC machining centers, are today’s advanced versions of CNC mills, specifically designed for applications involving non-ferrous metals, high performance alloys, special mold and model materials, for industries such as Aerospace, Advanced Materials, model and mold makers… a wide range of performance oriented, demanding industries.
CMS’ CNC mills and machining centers offer:
Extreme rigidity, engineered with FEA analysis and design,
Heavy duty, high performance, motion systems,
High velocity servomotors provided with high speed, extreme responsiveness, acceleration/deceleration control,
High accuracy scale systems, supported by our own laser calibration and certification services,
“Torque 5” motor control technology on the highest performance systems, with
Mechanical systems designed for zero backlash utilizing double opposing servomotors,
Thermic compensation joint technology,
High precision work tables of many types, which can also include the supporting flood, recirculation and chip removal systems,
A wide range of special devices, aggregates, turning and holding devices and more…
CMS technology, design and solution oriented machining centers provide the perfect transition between competing processing technologies with their unique demands. Whether it’s a CNC Router or a CNC Mill, they’re both CNC machining centers and CMS provides the specific performance edge for all the various technologies which have added to their name that of “CNC.”
