Antares - Moving Bridge
CMS developed Antares, a moving bridge solution spanning its side support shoulders, for manufacturers with limited floor space and working with advanced materials including plastic. Antares' moving bridge is a robust, rigid, 5 axis CNC milling and machining center capable of completing serious work in a compact work envelop. Antares' unique frame is ideal for small facilities since in can be quickly and easily installed. Antares requires no special footings or foundations, just a minimum 4" thick level concrete floor to set on, providing excellent stability and accuracy with its monobloc frame design.
Antares was also designed to achieve the highest possible rapid speed movements with the highest acceleration, deceleration characteristics possible through the optional application of high performance linear motors. Antares' equipped with linear motors on its X and Y axes reaches a rapid speed of 120 meters/minute, with an acc/dec of 6 meters/sec2 (rapid 4724"/min, acc/dec 236"/sec2).
Advanced materials machining relies upon accuracy and precision, and Antares’ structure ensures a high degree of rigidity, stability, and accuracy to achieve high precision. During machining processes the mobile bridge travels from front to back on the rigid shoulders of its monobloc frame structure. In addition, Antares features the same, well proven stability, in its B and C rotary axes which are each equipped with CMS' unique pneumatic brake system, which brake is engaged when either the B or C axes is not being interpolated, resulting in further high rigidity and stability.
CMS is known for its ability to provide solutions adapted to each customer’s particular requirement based on it years of engineering experience and solution resources. Antares' moving bridge allows for many key customizations including a wide range of table options like Fixed Steel Table, Vacuum Table, Cast Iron Table, and Rotary Table. Antares, supplied with vacuum table, is provided with two 100 cubic meter dry vacuum pumps and two 10 port Vacuum quick disconnect units located on each side of the work area. The vacuum pumps and disconnect units allow for quick set up and change over when a machining process requires the use of the vacuum table or fixtures to hold the work piece.
To protect the operator and general ambient environment, Antares can also be provided with an optional total dust enclosure, sealing Antares from above and leading to a quiet, effective dust control to meet ever increasing demands for workplace health and safety.
Antares - Machines
The Antares 5 axis CNC machining center is CMS' smaller, compact yet very fast version of Ares, with enhanced speed and flexibility. Antares' standard rapid speed of 80 meters/minute and acceleration/deceleration speed of 5 meters/sec^2 (rapid 3149"/min, acc/dec 197"/sec^2) can be enhanced with the addition of Antares' optional linear motor package, which makes Antares' rapid speed 120 meters/minute with an acceleration/deceleration of 5 meters/sec^2 (rapid 4724"/min, acc/dec of 236"/sec^2).
Antares' monoblock structure with enclosed sides and automatic opening and closing front doors results in rigid, stable performance along with complete safety for the operator. And Antares' work envelope gives manufacturers practical dimensions for a full, 5-axis, freeform, CNC machining center in a compact format:
- 12 kW head version: X axis 2600 mm, Y axis 1500 mm, Z axis 1200 mm, B axis +/- 120°, C axis +/- 270° with 12 kW (16 hp) at 12,000 rpm S1 rating and 24,000 rpm maximum, ATC head, liquid cooled, HSK63F connection 6 kW head version: X axis 2600 mm, Y axis 1500 mm, Z axis 1200 mm, B axis +/- 135°, C axis +/- 270° with 6 kW (8 hp) at 18,000 rpm S1 rating and 27,000 rpm maximum, ATC head, liquid cooled, ISO30 connection
To this can also be added Antares' optional Rotating Table, the TR version, which gives Antares a high speed nonstop (pendular) work cycle capability, providing for close proximity, easy load and unload conditions or allows it to be integrated into a work cell with robotic support for load/unload operations.
Antares is also available with high precision scales which can be optionally added to both the linear and rotary axes for CNC high speed machining.

In the top left and right corners Antares begins with a block of aluminum alloy and machines its initial end connection and joint work. In the lower left corner Antares is carrying out the finish milling passes on the surface. And in the lower right corner the precision mold with its highly finished surface is shown.
Antares - adapted for machining fused silica ceramic rollers
In this project, the Antares high speed CNC machining unit has been adapted for the special requirements of a large world group specializing in solutions for the primary and secondary glass industry. For this project, Antares takes fused silica ceramic rollers used to convey hot glass through tempering processes and machines the roller's surface and end connection joints. The process uses Antares' 5-axis capability along with a 6th axis CNC controlled lathe device so that the roller can be completed manipulated as required for a range of machining processes. The dust created by this process is completely contained within Antares' total enclosure and is extracted via its downdraft dust collection system and Antares moving parts and electronics are protected with its dust kit package.
Antares - precision processing of fused silica ceramic rollers
In this photo Antares is shown with the fused silica ceramic roller held in its 6th axis lathe device. In the background a range of special tools for machining, drilling and cleaning can be seen. The Antares 5 axis CNC machining center's high level of precision and control throughout the machining processes is essential - encompassing the roller's surface to its mechanical connection in the system in which it is installed.
From the manufacturer's point of view its rollers, which convey glass through extremely high temperatures during tempering operations, must be able to provide the finest surface finish, the tightest dimensional tolerances, and the best hot total indicator roller runout, otherwise the result will be detrimental to the quality of the tempered product.
