PMT - Moving Gantry
The PMT moving gantry system provides the durability and strength needed for machining large beams utilized in sports arenas and other large facilities. CMS' PMT machining center was developed due to request of engineers and facility designers and in part spurred by safety codes in various worldwide locales which recognize that wooden beams support longer in a fire than steel beams. This 5 axis CNC machining center for large wooden beams handles wood beams up to 60 meters in length and longer. The loading of the PMT moving gantry is done manually with a crane, as the wood parts to be machined are immense in size and weight. Once loaded a laser verifies the orientation of the beam, in order to adjust the CNC program within the working envelope.
PMT uses a mobile gantry structure to machine complicated wood beams, machining curves and even complex shapes, being a robust 5 axis CNC machining center. Even large beams can be machined to tight tolerances. Drawing from its extensive engineering resources and solutions over the decades, CMS offers complete solutions based on each customer’s unique requirement.
PMT - Machine
PMT, Maximum versatility for the machining of bulky curved beams and prefabricated house walls. The PMT Beams solution is CMS' 5 axis machining center with a moving gantry structure, for processing wooden beams (even on a massive scale), wooden wall sections and various components for the building industry. The PMT comes equipped with 3 tool-holder magazines, powerful electrospindle, large working area and a high automation level, all of which means the greatest machining flexibility.
PMT - moving gantry for truly large work.
As a moving gantry, PMT's solid massive structure makes it possible to carry out the required machining on parts with truly large volumetric dimensions.
PMT's large work envelope and part setup
PMT's large work envelope makes it possible to set up massive, heavy parts on raised supports, providing solid, flexible and accessible reach to the areas to be machined.
PMT's versatile part orientation
PMT's large work envelope makes it possible to set up more than one work piece at a time and in different orientations, as required.
PMT's moveable central shield
PMT can be equipped with a moveable central shield to permit safe setup on a new part while on the other side of the shield work continues on a different part, the shield has a vertical release movement.
PMT - solutions for holding large timber elements.
PMT's large work envelope can work with a variety of support fixtures. Here one special version makes it possible to securely hold massive curved timber elements. The fixtures bases are firmly held to the floor while permitting support stands to move laterally on them to provide flexible secure holding throughout the machining process. Here the timber element is undergoing machining with a large milling tool. In addition much of the dust can be captured during the machining process with the large hood and multiple large diameter dust collection pipes.
PMT - end trimming with one of its saw blades.
PMT, while securely holding the part during the machining cycle, brings one of its large diameter saw blades to the work piece to finish the required 5 axis joint cuts.
PMT - view of the support fixtures along the length of the machine and a deep hole drilling operation.
PMT places the required holes for the mechanical joints along the entire length of the timber beam element, making the precise angular positioning needed, at the required depth, and with power to spare.
PMT - Spindle & Working Unit Equipment
PMT's special equipment is specifically engineered to handle the complex range of processes required for heavy timber beam manufacturing, including its multiple tool magazines for standard tools, extra long tools and large diameter saw blades, dust collection hood around the working spindle with integrated dust collection pipe and even an optional vacuum table, if needed.
PMT's working spindle - maximum power and accuracy for timber beam processing.
PMT's working spindle provides maximum power and accuracy for all the jobs required in timber beam processing. PMT's spindle provides 28 kW at 4,300 rpm (max rotation of 17,000 rpm), is liquid cooled and comes with an HSK 80B toolholder connection.
PMT's 16-station tool magazine
PMT's 16-station tool carousel houses its milling cutters, drill-bits and angular transmissions - distance between tool magazine positions: 144 mm. The magazine is protected against dust; with a toolholders' pressurized protection fitted on the machine for the inner cleaning of the toolholder prior to insertion in the spindle. Possibility to use a mortising unit (400 mm work cutting depth).
PMT's 2nd tool magazine
PMT's 2nd tool magazine with 2 pickup places used for deep drilling tools with lengths of up to 700 mm.
PMT's 3rd tool magazine
PMT's 3rd tool magazine with a 2-station magazine for saw blades: one blade diameter of 800 mm and a second single-flange blade diameter of 600 mm.

PMT - Spindle & Working Unit Equipment, part #2
The PMT list of equipment continues…
PMT's dust collection management at the spindle
PMT's spindle comes equipped with an integrated dust collection tube that's available anytime a process needs it and the connection process is managed under the machine's control. Here the large blade has connected to the dust collection tube during the tool clamping phase on PMT's 28 kW spindle.
PMT's integrated dust pipe system
A shot of PMT's integrated dust take away system via the machine's cable-holder chain. The cable-holder chain and dust collection tube holder, diameter of 300 mm, is fitted on the upper rear side of the machine on supports.
Use of a large milling tool
A machining process requiring a large milling tool is no problem for PMT's powerful 28 kW spindle.
PMT - use of deep drilling tools
PMT's use of deep drilling tools creates no problem with its ability to provide lots of power at the low rpms required.
PMT - equipped with a vacuum table
PMT can be equipped with a vacuum table so that when required, it can be used just like a 5 axis router.
PMT - Some examples of finished projects
Here are some examples of what PMT's power and accuracy mean for timber frame constructors…
Dome with spiral staircase
A unique example of the complex use of timber frame elements to construct this dome with integrated spiral staircase.
A timber frame suspension bridge
A timber frame suspension bridge illustrating the possibilities and beauty available for today's and tomorrow's engineers.
Massive timber frame elements
It takes massive structures in wood for such projects, but PMT handles them in the normal course of its work.
Joint preparation
Preparing the joints that eventually come together on the job.
Putting it all together…
When the job comes together PMT's power and precision are shown in the outcome: a work of beauty that fulfills it purpose.
